FAQs

If you are the owner of a plot of land, think that it could be a good location for a solar or wind farm, and would be interested in renting it with this purpose, please get in touch with us via our email buzon@alarde.es.

If you want to know a little more about the necessary characteristics of land, we suggest you read the answers to the most frequently asked questions in that respect:

What characteristics should the ideal plot of land have?
There are quite a few factors that determine the suitability of a plot of land as the optimal location for a solar or wind farm. These include: the quality of wind (wind speed, predominant wind direction, absence of gusts and turbulence, air density) or solar resources (radiation, temperature, ventilation), proximity to electric lines with evacuation capacity for interconnection purposes, distance from urban centers, technical viability and ease of construction or absence of environmental, urban, archeological and cultural factors.
Can I make additional use of my land once it’s been rented?

Wind farms are compatible with a high number of other uses. There are cases of wind farms doubling as pastures for cattle, sheep, wild animals, as land for farming, hunting and recreational activities or even as oil wells and gas reserves, to name but a few.

In the case of solar farms, the intensive use of land for installation of solar panels prohibits additional use of that land.

What surface area is needed?

It depends on the size of a farm. A wind farm may require between 15 and 30 hectares per MW of installed capacity, depending on the site’s topography, but of this surface area only about 5% is used for equipment and back-up structures, including wind turbines, electric lines, sub-stations and access roads, thanks to which the rest of land can retain its compatible uses.

In the case of a photovoltaic solar farm, the size of the area will depend on the technology used.

Polycrystalline panels mounted in a fixed position require 2.5 ha per MW of installed capacity, whereas thin-layer panels — 5 ha per MW of installed capacity.

How much rent can I charge for my land?
There are various rent formulas available and rent depends on the land itself and the project under construction. We at ALARDE look for the most satisfactory solutions for all parties.
How much electricity can be generated?
The exact quantity of electricity generated by a wind or solar farm basically depends on the wind or solar resources available on the site. As a general rule, one can expect each MW of installed wind capacity to serve 550 homes and each MW of installed solar capacity to serve 320 homes.
What effects do these types of energy have on the environment?
This figure can vary considerably depending on the energy output of the plant in question, the area, the existing energy mix and other factors, but on average each MW of installed capacity is estimated to prevent the emission of about 1,700 tones of CO2 (a wind power plant) and 900 tones of CO2 (a photovoltaic solar plant).
